Where: Ubud, Bali
When: November 2019
Near where we lived in Ubud was an area known for its wood carvers. I did some research and managed to find us a wood carving class. This was run as a private class for us by a guy who was a 4th generation wood carver.
The whole experience was amazing, from him giving us lots of history lessons of Ubud, as well as explaining different woods, their characteristics, and the history of the various tools.
Once he’d showed us the basics of how to hold the wood (with your feet!) and use the tools. He took 4 blocks of wood and marked out designs in pencil. He then showed us each how to do a certain area and then let us do the work. After each section, he’d explain what to do next, and we’d go again.
Considering none of us had done anything like this before (and the children are only 7 and 9) I was really impressed with our end results!
